Here at Swifties, we celebrate excellence, dedication, and the people who make our badminton community sparkle. Today, we’re shining a light on someone who embodies all of that and more: Toby Penty.
For many, Toby is known as England’s badminton stalwart, the man who represented Team GB at the Tokyo Olympics. But for those of us in the grassroots community, especially around London, Toby is so much more. He’s a phenomenal coach, a generous mentor, and a genuinely nice person who has left an indelible mark on clubs and players of all levels.
The Elite Player Who Made Time for Everyone
Long after the Olympic spotlight faded, Toby chose to base his training at the Wimbledon Racquets & Fitness Club. This wasn’t just a high-performance bubble. In a move that speaks volumes about his character, he trained in a group environment where the club’s juniors and aspiring players could also be present.
For young athletes like the promising 15-year-old Oliver Wu, this was invaluable. They weren’t just hearing about elite habits; they were witnessing them daily. They could observe Toby’s meticulous preparation, his relentless focus during drills, and his resilience in practice matches. He became a living benchmark, showing that the top of the game was built on consistent, dedicated work. For these juniors, having an Olympian as a regular training companion made the pinnacle of the sport feel not just inspiring, but genuinely within reach.
The Coach with a Heart of Gold
Since hanging up his international racket, Toby has transitioned seamlessly into coaching. And true to form, his approach has been incredibly inclusive. His coaching philosophy has always been remarkably inclusive. Time and again, he demonstrated a genuine willingness to share his knowledge, offering guidance and encouragement to players of every age and level whenever his schedule allowed.
He didn’t just focus on the next generation of elites. He understood the value of the wider badminton family. His patience, technical eye, and encouraging manner have helped countless intermediate and club players improve their game and, more importantly, their love for it. He’s been a constant source of support, driving players through “the ups and downs,” as one parent beautifully put it.

These moments were nurtured through the private junior sessions he championed. What began as Tuesday trainings were thoughtfully moved to Fridays several months ago to accommodate his growing role at the National Badminton Centre, ensuring his guidance continued for as long as possible. These images are a testament to that commitment.
Our Champion at the Wu Badminton Tournaments
Perhaps the best example of Toby’s commitment to the community is his involvement with the Wu Badminton Tournaments. He didn’t just make a celebrity appearance; he participated.
He’s played in our tournaments—not just once, but twice—bringing his world-class skills to our intermediate-level events and doing so with great sportsmanship and a smile. He’s also stepped up on multiple occasions to present prizes to our champions, sharing in their moments of victory and making them feel truly special.
You can see him in action and read about one of these fantastic community events here: Look Who Is Our New Champion! – Wu Badminton Tournament Success.

A New Chapter, But The Legacy Remains
Recently, Toby announced he is moving on to a full-time role at the National Badminton Centre. While it’s the perfect next challenge for him, the news was met with a wave of heartfelt thanks from Wimbledon players, parents, and coaches. The messages called him an “amazing role model,” a “true inspiration,” and thanked him for his “constant support and drive.”
That’s the Toby Penty effect. He proves that greatness isn’t just about titles and rankings; it’s about the impact you have on the people around you. He has built a legacy not just on the international circuit, but on the local courts where the future of the sport is being nurtured.
So, from all of us at Swifties and the wider UK badminton community: Thank you, Toby. Thank you for the shuttles you’ve smashed, the points you’ve coached, and the kindness you’ve shown. The National Centre is incredibly lucky to have you. We’ll miss seeing you around the local halls, but we can’t wait to see you shine in your next chapter.
